Modern society is grappling with the pervasive threat of misinformation spread, threatening detrimental effects on democracy and public health. Experts in psychology and information science examine the reasons behind the allure and dissemination of false information, and seek ways address this pernicious problem. Clearly, the social media platforms that help propagate misinformation have had mixed success using moderation to stem its spread. But there are means of mitigation, including a technique known as cognitive inoculation that aims to build mental resilience against misinformation. Unfortunately, further challenges loom. The rising use of AI will only exacerbate the problem, making public education about misinformation tactics even more vital. Can misinformation actually be controlled? The stakes are high. When the truth is negotiable, we all pay the price.—Gene Russo
