The 2013 summit was held at the California Yacht Club

The opening address was delivered by Tom Sito (Animator, Historian, and Professor of Animation at U. Southern California). Tom took us through a fascinating timeline of the development of modern digital animation beginning in the 1940’s. Learned some pretty amazing stuff about the beginnings of animation and the re-tasking of decommissioned military computers to create the first crude computer graphics. Following the keynote, there were a number panels throughout the day, two of my favorites were the panels on the Business of Show Business and Preparing your Indie for US Distribution

Tuesday began with keynote speaker Jay Redd (Visual Effects Supervisor, Sony Pictures Imageworks) discussing his career path and some of the cool stuff they are doing at Sony Imageworks. There was a lot of discussion today regarding international co-production/co-financing and the value of creating your own IP (Intellectual Property) – as opposed to only producing for others.
